Will the PNG be bigger than my JPG?
Usually yes, often several times bigger. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is great for graphics and wasteful for photographs.
Does converting a JPG to PNG restore lost quality?
No. Quality already discarded by JPG compression cannot come back. The PNG simply stops any further loss from happening.
When should I use PNG over JPG?
Screenshots, logos, icons, diagrams and anything with sharp edges, flat colour or transparency. Photographs are almost always better as JPG or WebP.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. Converting a transparent WebP or GIF to PNG keeps the alpha channel intact.
