Image Sizes for Etsy, Amazon and eBay Listings
Each marketplace has its own minimum dimensions and file rules, and getting them wrong costs you the zoom feature or the listing itself. Here are the current specs.
Listing photos are the whole shop window. Get the dimensions wrong and you lose the zoom function, fail the upload, or end up with a thumbnail that looks amateur next to the seller ranked above you.
Here is what each platform wants right now.
Etsy
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Recommended size | 2000 × 2000 px |
| Minimum short edge | 1000 px |
| Best ratio | 4:3 landscape (2000 × 1500) |
| Maximum file size | 20 MB |
| Formats | JPG, PNG, GIF |
| Photos per listing | Up to 10 |
Etsy crops thumbnails to 4:3, so a square image loses its top and bottom in the search grid. Shoot or crop to 4:3 and what buyers see in search is what you intended.
The 1000 px minimum is a real threshold, not a suggestion — below it the zoom function is disabled, and on a handmade item where texture is the selling point, that costs you sales.
Amazon
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Recommended size | 2000 × 2000 px |
| Minimum long edge | 1600 px for zoom |
| Absolute minimum | 1000 px |
| Maximum | 10000 px |
| Formats | JPG preferred; TIFF, PNG, GIF accepted |
| Colour space | sRGB or CMYK |
Amazon is the strictest of the three, and the main image rules are enforced: pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), the product filling 85 per cent of the frame, no logos, no watermarks, no text, no props and no borders.
Additional images are much more relaxed — lifestyle shots, scale references and detail close-ups are all allowed and all help.
eBay
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Recommended long edge | 1600 px |
| Minimum long edge | 500 px |
| Maximum file size | 12 MB |
| Formats | JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF |
| Photos per listing | Up to 24 free |
eBay disallows borders, added text and watermarks on the main gallery image. The 1600 px long edge is what enables zoom, and listings with zoom convert better.
The rules that apply everywhere
Square is the safest shape. Every platform handles 1:1 predictably. If you shoot one set of photos for several marketplaces, square travels best — except on Etsy search, where 4:3 wins.
Bigger original, then shrink. Shoot at the highest resolution your camera offers and scale down. Enlarging a small photo produces a soft result that stands out badly next to competitors.
Leave breathing room. Do not crop hard to the product edges. Platforms crop thumbnails differently, and a tight crop gets clipped.
Consistency reads as professionalism. Same background, same lighting, same angle across a listing looks like a real shop. Mixed backgrounds look like a car boot sale.
Compress before uploading. Not to squeeze under the cap, but because platforms recompress everything. Hand them a sensible file and you keep control of how it looks.
Preparing a batch
A workflow that takes a couple of minutes for a whole listing:
- Resize everything to 2000 × 2000, with keep-aspect-ratio on
- Compress at 85 per cent quality — well inside every file cap, with no visible loss
- Convert to JPG if anything is PNG or WebP, since JPG is universally accepted
You can run an entire product shoot at once rather than one photo at a time.
A note for sellers
If you sell digital products, your listing images are also your inventory, and uploading them to unknown servers to resize them is worth avoiding.
Everything here runs inside your browser — your photos are never uploaded, never stored and never seen by anyone but you. It is free for life with no sign-up and no daily limit, so you can prepare a hundred listings this week and another hundred next week without an account, a watermark or a subscription.
