What is the difference between skip and start?
Skip decides which pages get a number printed on them. Start decides what the first printed number says. Set skip to 1 and start to 1 and your cover stays clean while the next page is numbered 1.
What does the outer edge option do?
It puts the number on the right for odd pages and on the left for even ones. That is the convention for anything bound or printed double-sided, because it keeps the number away from the spine.
Will the numbers be selectable text?
Yes. They are drawn as real text, so they can be selected, copied and searched like anything else in the document.
What if a page already has a number there?
The new number is drawn on top, which looks messy. Move it to a different position instead.
