Social Media Image Sizes in 2026: The Complete Cheat Sheet
Exact pixel dimensions for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, TikTok and Pinterest — plus the safe-zone rules that stop your text getting cropped.
Every platform crops differently, and every platform changes its mind occasionally. Here are the dimensions that work right now, along with the handful of rules that matter more than the exact numbers.
| Placement | Size | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 |
| Stories and Reels | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 | 1:1 |
Portrait at 4:5 takes up the most vertical space in the feed, which is why most creators default to it. For Stories and Reels, keep anything important inside the middle 1080 × 1420 — the top and bottom bands are covered by the interface and by captions.
| Placement | Size |
|---|---|
| Feed post | 1200 × 630 |
| Square feed post | 1080 × 1080 |
| Stories | 1080 × 1920 |
| Page cover | 1640 × 856 |
| Event cover | 1920 × 1005 |
| Profile picture | 360 × 360 |
The page cover crops differently on mobile than on desktop. Keep logos and text within the central area or half your audience will see them sliced.
| Placement | Size |
|---|---|
| Feed post | 1200 × 627 |
| Personal cover | 1584 × 396 |
| Company page cover | 1128 × 191 |
| Profile picture | 400 × 400 |
| Article header | 1920 × 1080 |
The personal cover at 1584 × 396 is an unusually wide strip, and your profile photo sits over the left portion of it on desktop. Put nothing important there.
X (Twitter)
| Placement | Size |
|---|---|
| Single image post | 1600 × 900 |
| Header | 1500 × 500 |
| Profile picture | 400 × 400 |
YouTube
| Placement | Size |
|---|---|
| Thumbnail | 1280 × 720 |
| Channel banner | 2560 × 1440 |
| Shorts | 1080 × 1920 |
Thumbnails must come in under 2 MB or YouTube rejects them — a very common reason an upload fails. The banner is the trickiest image on any platform: it is 2560 × 1440, but only the central 1546 × 423 is guaranteed visible on every device.
TikTok and Pinterest
| Placement | Size |
|---|---|
| TikTok video | 1080 × 1920 |
| TikTok profile | 200 × 200 |
| Pinterest standard pin | 1000 × 1500 (2:3) |
| Pinterest long pin | 1000 × 2100 |
Pinterest is strict about 2:3. Pins outside that ratio get truncated in the feed, which usually chops off exactly the part you wanted people to read.
The four rules that matter more than the numbers
1. Never scale up. Start from the largest original you have and shrink to fit. Enlarging a small image produces a soft, mushy result that no amount of sharpening fixes properly.
2. Respect the safe zone. Every platform overlays something — captions, buttons, profile pictures, progress bars. Keep text and faces away from the outer 10 per cent, and further from the top and bottom on vertical formats.
3. Watch the file size. Platforms recompress everything you upload. Handing them a 15 MB image does not give you a better result; it just means their compressor decides how it looks instead of you. Compress it yourself first and you keep control.
4. Pick the right format. Photographs go as JPG. Anything with text, logos or flat colour goes as PNG — a graphic saved as JPG picks up visible fuzz around every letter.
Getting your images to size
Both steps take seconds and happen entirely in your browser:
- Resize Image — type the exact pixel dimensions from the tables above, or scale a whole batch by percentage
- Compress Image — cap the width and trim the quality in one pass
- Convert to PNG — for anything with text or transparency
- Convert to JPG — for photographs
You can process a hundred images at once, and there is no sign-up, no daily limit and no cost — free for life. Nothing you resize is uploaded anywhere; it all happens on your own device, which is exactly why there is no cap to hit.
